Zanzibar Introduces Mandatory Travel Insurance for Tourists
Starting October 2024
Starting from October 1, 2024, the Zanzibar government has implemented a new policy requiring all foreign tourists visiting the island to purchase mandatory travel insurance. This measure is intended to enhance visitor safety and ensure quick access to support in case of medical emergencies or other unforeseen events during their stay on the island.
What Does the Mandatory Insurance Include?
The insurance offers comprehensive coverage for various unforeseen situations during the stay in Zanzibar, including:
- Emergency medical expenses covering up to USD 50,000, including incidents related to pandemics and epidemics.
- Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if necessary.
- Personal accidents and liability coverage of up to USD 30,000.
- 24/7 assistance for emergencies, including arranging accommodation and emergency transport.
- Coverage for baggage loss or delays, as well as theft or material damage.
Cost and Validity of the Insurance
- The insurance policy costs USD 44 for adults and USD 22 for children aged 3 to 17, with free coverage for children under 3. The insurance is valid for 92 consecutive days from the date of arrival, ensuring full protection throughout the vacation. For longer stays, a new policy must be purchased.
How to Purchase the Insurance?
- The insurance can be purchased online before traveling via the official website of the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) or at arrival on the island. After purchasing, tourists will receive a QR code confirming the policy, which must be presented at immigration upon entry to Zanzibar. It's important to note that other travel insurances, including those from Romania or other countries, will not be accepted, as purchasing the insurance mandated by the Zanzibar government is mandatory.
Travelers are required to buy this insurance online in advance and present it at passport control upon arrival.
Impact on Tourism
Although this measure comes with additional costs for tourists, the Zanzibar government is optimistic that mandatory insurance will improve the visitor experience, providing them with increased safety and peace of mind during their stay. The policy is also expected to contribute to increasing government revenues and enhancing the tourism infrastructure in Zanzibar.
Similar mandatory insurance measures are already implemented in popular destinations such as Cuba and Seychelles, reflecting a global trend in tourism to protect visitors and support local healthcare systems.
Recommendation for Tourists! Please ensure that travelers purchase this insurance and have all the necessary documents ready before traveling to Zanzibar to avoid any issues upon arrival.
